Kiwanians know that reading is the most important component of a good education. Over the last couple of months we have been learning about the needs of our public school libraries and what impact the elimination of funding is having on the children in our community.
Our club has began the process to organize "Bookin 4 Books," a community wide service project. We plan to use Bookin 4 Books as an umbrella under which we can rally the Fairhope community in an ongoing effort to support the Fairhope K-1 Center, Elementary, Intermediate, J Larry Newton, Middle, and High School libraries.
We are planning our first event for this Spring. The event will consist of two parts, a "Book Sale" and the Bookin 4 Books - 5k Plot Trot and 1 Mile Pun Run.
The "Book Sale" portion of Bookin 4 Books will provide members of the community the opportunity to help our libraries by buying books. This will take place in the weeks prior to the run. Students will be rewarded for their efforts through various award levels including free participation in the run.
The Bookin 4 Books 5k Plot Trot and 1 Mile Pun Run is planned for 8 a.m. on April 24, 2010. The run will begin and end at Fairhope Middle School. An adult supervised Story Time area will be provided to entertain young children while parents and older siblings run.
More details will be posted soon.
